Web Web 'Apotheosis' (Compost Records) - premiere

April 2, 2025

Always a thrill to premiere a new track to the world and this fizzing, jazzy krautrocker from the Munich-based jazz outfit Web Web certainly deserves highlighting. From their forthcoming sixth album ‘Plexus Plexus’, special guest JJ Whitefield (The Poets Of Rhythm / Karl Hector & The Malcouns / Syrup) lays down his fuzzed-up guitar line all over ‘Apotheosis’, the end result resembling a focussed mash up of cosmic Neu!, Os Mutantes and the electric Miles Davis energy that permeates the rest of the album. Janek van Laak 'Circle of Madness' (Sonar Kollektiv) - a review

March 15, 2024

Wildly talented, the Berlin based drummer and composer, Janek van Laak, has a fascinating new album out today on Sonar Kollektiv that straddles a multitude of genres. The spirit of punk and the theatrics of cabaret in his DNA (literally), Janek has pulled in friends and players, collaboration the key to helping him express the many creative roads his mind is travelling on. Touches of future-funk, jazz in all its finery, Afro-Latin rhythms, psychedelia, soundtracks, post-punk edges. It’s all there, and more. Read / Listen

Harper Trio 'Passing By' (Little Yellow Man Records) - a review

November 3, 2023

For decades, the harp was a rare flower dotted meagerly amongst the accepted solo instruments that were afforded respect in the world of jazz. Outstanding harpists such as Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby needed new generations to recognise their genius and worth but now, on the shoulders of these giants, we live in a golden era of jazz-harpists and Greek born Maria-Christina Harper will surely find herself in the frontline with her debut album. Harper Trio’s exploratory merging of Mediterranean folkloric influences and bluesy expression alongside touches of the contemporary avant-garde offers a new way of viewing the instrument and how it can be played. Alongside the brilliant Josephine Davies on saxophone and Evan Jenkins on drums, she has created an outstanding album that vibrates with its own distinct personality. Read / Listen.

Siema Ziemia 'Second' (Byrd Out) - a review

July 19, 2023

Polish outfit Siema Ziemia’s forthcoming album ‘Second’ for Byrd Out is a challenging collision of electronica, acoustic improvisational wildness with moments of free jazz energy. My thesaurus is ill equipped to invent a genre for this, just trust me that amongst the fireworks, there is an emotional vulnerability to their creation. Read / Listen.

Error Subcutáneo 'Temporada Ciclónica' (Running Circle) - a review

June 21, 2023

The new 7 track E.P. that Dominican Republic duo Error Subcutáneo have released today on Summer Solstice is a provocative and wild ride of free jazz, soundscape interventions and modular experimentalism fueled by the chaos of life in the Caribbean and the wider uncertainties of our world right now. Band member Mauro Ferreiro is a frequent contributor to our magazine and this record is released on Nottingham imprint Running Circle so somehow, a kind of harmony has arrived from the chaos. A lot like the music. Read / Listen

Jay Phelps 'Finding Centaurii' (Platoon) - Single Premiere!

March 28, 2023

We are delighted to premiere the first single from Jay Phelps’ forthcoming album ‘The Now’ on Platoon. ‘Finding Centaurii' is a rollercoaster of a tune; the UK based trumpeter, DJ and producer has created a majestic collision of the progressive UK, Detroit and L.A. jazz-house-beats scenes and it works beautifully. Imagine the energetic dread of Moses Boyd’s ‘Rye Lane Shuffle’ x Thundercat x FlyLo x Brainfeeder and you’d be close. This is a big tune. Read / Listen

Agile Experiments 'These Are Times For Mind And Spirit' (DDR Records) - a review

October 13, 2022

Probably my fave Agile Experiments record to date. Edrix Puzzle 'Coming Of The Moon Dogs' (On The Corner Records) - album announcement

September 21, 2022

A heavyweight collision of ‘Mwandishi-era Herbie Hancock meets space-weight electronics, classical violin & instrumental analogue noir’ is contained in this forthcoming album from the Planet Battagon spin-off Edrix Puzzle. Nathan “Tugg” Curran and his London-based outfit have dropped an interference in the order propelled by cosmic dread and serious improvisational chops. This is heavy post-punk-jazz-dub Juju. “Pierre Barouh and the Saravah Sound” (WEWANTSOUNDS) - a review

July 14, 2022

Saravah was one of the most influential French labels of the 60s and 70s, and Pierre Barouh, singer, composer and producer extraordinaire, was a master at harnessing disparate talents, creating one of the best musical catalogues anywhere. Out there jazz and French underground pop collide with Brazilian and African flavours that sound as exciting now as when they were created. In partnership with Barouh’s son, Benjamin, WEWANTSOUNDS have given us the first ever retrospective of the revolutionary Saravah sound on vinyl and it is immaculate. Read / Listen

Alawari 'Alawari' (April Records) - a review

April 13, 2022

Alawari are a young 7 piece jazz collective from Denmark and this, their debut album, is a truly stunning musical document that seems to manage to capture the troubled times that we are living through. A brilliant mix of lush classical arrangements with levels of uninhibited free jazz expression, the record is “Inspired by the spirit of revolution and ancient war” and it sounds like it. Exceptional. Read / Listen here

Ka Safar are a thirteen-headed world jazz outfit from the centre of the UK who appear to be trying to reach the centre of the cosmos on their brand new album ‘Ancient Tribal Hearts’. From original Arkestra style groove-freakouts to arrangements of ancient musical and religious notations, this is a remarkable record bursting with energy and ideas that needs to be in the collections of those who love Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra et al. David Wertman at U Mass - first time Lynne heard him play April 1980

David Wertman & Sun Ensemble 'Wide Eye Culture' (BBE) - a preview

February 14, 2022

The great bassist David Wertman left the free jazz loft scene of 70s New York to live a life of spiritual harmony in the rural charms of the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts with his wife and musical partner Lynne Meryl but they never stopped making sublime music. BBE have compiled some exceptional (and rare) recordings from the early 80s into a superb new release called ‘Wide Eye Culture’. Here we offer excerpts from the in depth liner notes, in particular from the revealing interviews between Lynne and BBE’s Will Sumsuch. Read here…

Jan Van 'Streams' (Teranga Beat) - a review

October 21, 2021

‘Streams’ is an excellent album of cinematic noir created live by rhythmic maestro Jan Van aka Yannis Angelolopoulos and the cream of Athens’ jazz and improvisational musicians. Funky, spacious and reflective, their unique fusion of contemporary improv jazz and laïkodimotiko (local, popular music) is a fine blend indeed. Read / Listen here
