On August 29 2005, New Orleans was hit by one of the worst hurricanes in American history. 80% of New Orleans was flooded with some areas up to 4.8 metres underwater. Over half a million people were evacuated. One of the first truly multicultural cities in the USA and the birthplace of Jazz was devastated. Revolution and Change presents a snapshot of the music and art before and after this event and provides inspiration for change on a local and national level.  

The Revolution and Change series looks at significant dates, events and places in history and presents a snapshot of the music and art connected to these events. The programme includes collaborations from Nottingham and UK based individuals that in some way are trying to create a revolution or change in their field.

Reclaim The Street Music 7.30 - 11pm
Brass Band Funk from New Orleans

Joff will be celebrating the Jazz / Funk / Hip Hop / of New Orleans, playing contemporary street bands or ‘second line’ music exemplified by the likes of the Hot 8 Brass Band. This music is some of the most explosive raw funk around. No better example of this is a key recordings by the likes of Grammy award winning Rebirth Brass Band - ‘The Rebirth of New Orleans’. This brass street music is the cornerstone of New Orleans Street culture. Often fused with hip hop, the music is as much about social commentary as it is about dancing and partying.

Ex-Friendly and Fuzzy Funk will be dropping soul and funk from New Orleans and her diaspora, celebrating some of the most important and influential recording made in the 60’s and 70’s.

From Mouthpiece On Back is a feature-length documentary about To Be Continued Brass Band’s courageous return to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and a tribute to their unique blend of jazz and hip hop that is carrying the torch for Brass Band Music.

In the summer of 2005, To Be Continued Brass Band, the youngest jazz band in New Orleans, and one of the last best hopes for survival of New Orleans’ legendary jazz traditions, is on the verge of going from The Big Easy to The Big Time.

Acclaimed music group The Roots takes an active interest in helping TBC try to make it out of the city’s scariest neighborhoods and into their dreams. TBC’s future is as bright as the renowned Bourbon Street corner where they wow overflow crowds with their unique blend of jazz, brass, and funk.

But then Hurricane Katrina drowned everything they had, except their spirit. The band members rely on that spirit to persevere in their struggle to reunite and preserve the continuity of New Orleans and her one-of-a-kind music traditions.

Even TBC’s name is a metaphor describing its quest to help the Crescent City carry on in the face of an epic calamity threatening not only the city’s survival but also survival of the city’s singular musical heritage.

TBC’s struggle is, in a sense, the struggle of an entire community that mirrors obstacles faced by anyone trying to overcome adversity.Their courage, talent, and humor will inspire and energize you.

‘BE NICE OR LEAVE’
Participatory art installation and screen print session

New Orleans folk artist Dr Bob makes his art out of debris, of what is left behind. Bottletops, old crates and lost and forgotten signs. His slogan ‘Be Nice or Leave’ has become adopted by New Orleans citizens as a mantra for the city. We've invited two Nottingham artists to interpret his work:

Short Documentary: About the history of Dr. Bob, a New Orleans folk artist. He is most famous for his "Be Nice or Leave" paintings which gave many New Orleanians a sense of hope after Hurricane Katrina.

Have a Lovely Day - Courtyard installation - 6.30 - 11pm 

‘Have A Lovely Day’ You may well have seen that in random locations around the city. In the spirit of Dr Bob, Nick Hansen will be recreating his ‘Have a lovely day’ tag in bottletops in the courtyard at Rough Trade. Come and help the artist build the mural!

Be Nice Or Leave - Screenprint poster or tote bag - 7.30 - 11pm

Artist and Illustrator Sarah Ormanroyd interprets ‘Be Nice Or Leave’ in her own style.
Put down the computer for 15 minutes and make something real! Come and have a go at printing it yourself and get yourself a limited edition signed print or tote bag.
(Not everything is made by robots in China and sold in Primark.)
