Jackson Mathod 'Come On Now' (Bridge the Gap x New Soil) - single review

June 17, 2022

Words by Justin Turford

Jackson Mathod is one of those names that is constantly being dropped in promo sales notes. A virtuosic trumpeter that a ton of artists and labels appear to have on speed-dial such is the demand for his horn magic, he’s graced the likes of Jordan Rakei and Stormzy amongst many but in 2020, he decided to start releasing music under his own name and here we have the second single and title track from his forthcoming EP ‘Come On Now’ on the newly formed imprint Bridge the Gap x New Soil.

Made as a mood-booster during lockdown, Come On Now is a summery blast of seriously funky and slinky instrumental jazz-funk with Pee Wee Ellis horn lines, ridiculously intricate drums from McNasty (Wizkid) and Tom Misch’s side guitarist Charlie Allen absolutely tearing it up over sharply arranged bass and keys and the occasional shout out of ‘Come On Now!’.

A banger without too much banging, go grab it!
